Why Do You Have to Be So Emotional?
We're not supposed to take on certain tones like anger or outrage...
In January of this year, I stood in a room full of 300-odd people, surrounded by 20 paintings about women’s bodies and societal expectations. The paintings were mine, the event was my first solo show, and it was the response of that room full of people that sowed the seed for this new collection.
Because the multiple conversations that I had about the scale of the problem and the impact of it led me to thinking about how the regulation of women and gender minorities extends beyond their bodies. And to wondering what a collection of paintings about the policing of our tone might look like.
We’re not supposed to take on certain tones like anger or outrage, and we’re given labels like emotional or irrational when we do. All of that to move the focus away from the contents of our message. Basically, we're told, your message will be heard if you learn to present it in a calm and pleasant way.
And so this collection explores some of those tones and emotions, as they're swallowed up by a candy colour palette representative of that pleasantness society seeks.
...prices that aren't always possible.
Something else that I really wanted to achieve with this collection was accessibility. I'm conscious that it's not easy to find the funds for original art, and my work is highly detailed which can make it hard to keep costs down.
But the act of creating six paintings together as if they were a whole allowed me to produce differently and therefore price differently. And so I'm able to offer the pieces in this collection at prices that aren't always possible.
And I've also had myself authorised with additional payment providers, to increase your options for interest-free payment plans.
